In a new HBO documentary Evan Rachel Wood said she was “essentially raped on-camera” during the making of Marilyn Manson’s 2007 music video “Heart-Shaped Glasses” when she was 18. The director of the documentary decided to show the scene “for what it was.” Manson has denied the allegation.
In the documentary Evan Rachel Wood said “We’re doing things that were not what was pitched to me. We had discussed a simulated sex scene, but once the cameras were rolling, he started penetrating me for real. I had never agreed to that. … It was complete chaos. I did not feel safe. No one was looking after me.”
Wood continued, “I was coerced into a commercial sex act under false pretenses, that’s when the first crime was committed against me. I was essentially raped on-camera.”
Several times in the past Evan Rachel Wood has alleged how Marilyn Manson had “horrifically abused” her from 2006 to 2011.
Wood and Manson, whose real name is Brian Warner, started dating publicly when she was was 18 and he was 38, but in 2021 Evan said she was “brainwashed and manipulated into submission” by Manson, saying, “I stand with the many victims who will no longer be silent.”

In the documentary, Wood also said that Manson was “really clear” regarding how she could promote the music video during any interview, “I was supposed to tell people we had this great, romantic time and none of that was the truth,” Evan Rachel Wood says, “But I was scared to do anything that would upset him in any way.”
Wood continued, “The video was just the beginning of the violence that would keep escalating over the course of the relationship.”
During the video filming, Wood said that she could not give consent to what happened to her because was under the influence, “We had discussed a simulated sex scene, but once the cameras were rolling, he started penetrating me for real. I had never agreed to that. I’m a professional actress, I have been doing this my whole life. I’d never been on a set that unprofessional in my life up until this day. It was complete chaos, and I did not feel safe.”

“It was a really traumatizing experience filming the video. I didn’t know how to advocate for myself or know how to say no because I had been conditioned and trained to never talk back — to just soldier through. I felt disgusting and that I had done something shameful, and I could tell that the crew was uncomfortable and nobody knew what to do.” Wood explained.
Amy Berg, the director of the documentary Phoenix Rising, which debuted at the Sundance Film Festival, spoke about the rape scene and why decided to include it in the documentary in its entirety, “Well, you need to see her face. She is completely out of it, and you need to see the extent of what the industry allowed to be circulating on the internet today. We had Evan’s blessing and permission to use that, but I think that is a moment that is really important to understand. I mean, that film set had a lot of people on it and that behavior is completely inappropriate and abusive and it’s rape, so we wanted to show it for what it was. She was just a child, she just turned 18.”
