Rapper R. Kelly Found Guilty Of Sexual Exploitation of a Child, Trafficking, Racketeering
Singer R. Kelly has been found guilty of 12 of 14 charges of sexual exploitation of a child, sex trafficking across state lines, racketeering, and bribery after a long six week trial in the Eastern District of New York. Rapper R. Kelly’s real name is Robert Sylvester Kelly.
After accusations of sexual abuse and other charges that accumulated over 25 years, the now infamous rapper R. Kelley, 54, was found guilty by jury for enacting a scheme to sexually abuse children and young women. Before the guilty verdict was read after only nine hours of deliberation, eleven of R. Kelley’s accusers took the stand to describe the violence and sexual humiliation they suffered from the star.
A jury that consisted of 7 men and 5 woven had found the government proved that 12 of the 14 acts involved five victims, including Aaliyah, the popular young singer who married Kelly after she became pregnant by Kelley at the age of 15 when Kelly was 27. Aaliyah died tragically in a plane crash in 2001 at the young age of 22.
Multiple victims of Kelley’s sexual assault had testified that they were young girls and boys when Kelley lured them in and sexually abused them. R. Kelly apparently chose his sexual victims from his concert audiences, and enticed other young up and coming musicians for his sexual pleasures by promising to help them in their music careers.
Kelley’s defense team denied all charges, telling the 12 person jury that they had been misled by “opportunistic accusers” and that all of Kelley’s relationships were consensual.
Kelley’s guilty verdict came thirteen years after he was acquitted of child pornography charges in Illinois, but the rapper is still facing charges of child pornography and obstruction of justice in that state and also in and Minnesota.
R. Kelly faces a potential prison sentence of 10 years to life, he will be sentenced on May 4th, 2022.
