Maren Morris, known for her chart-topping hits and outspoken stance in the music industry, made headlines again as she celebrated Pride Month by publicly coming out as bisexual. The singer-songwriter, who had previously announced her departure from the country genre citing its conservatism, took to Instagram on June 9 from a show in Phoenix, Arizona, where she shared her truth.

“Happy pride,” Morris wrote alongside photos of herself proudly holding a pride flag. “Happy to be the B in LGBTQ+.”

This revelation follows several months after Morris finalized her divorce from fellow country singer Ryan Hurd, with whom she shares a 4-year-old son named Hayes. The couple’s split was confirmed in January after Morris filed for divorce last October, citing irreconcilable differences.

In addition to her personal journey, Morris has been a vocal advocate for inclusivity within the country music scene. Her departure from the genre was fueled by her concerns over its conservative values, which came to a head during her public disagreements with Brittany Kerr, wife of Jason Aldean, over transphobic remarks regarding gender-affirming healthcare.

Reflecting on her decision to step away from country music, Morris told the Los Angeles Times, “I’ve always been an asker of questions and a status-quo challenger just by being a woman. So it wasn’t really even a choice.” She emphasized her commitment to critiquing the industry she once loved, stating, “If you truly love this type of music, and you start to see problems arise, it needs to be criticized. Anything this popular should be scrutinized if we want to see progress.”

Morris has also been a staunch supporter of LGBTQ+ representation in music, applauding T.J. Osborne of Brothers Osborne when he came out as gay in 2021. During an appearance on Ellen DeGeneres’ show, Morris expressed admiration for Osborne’s bravery and emphasized the importance of inclusivity in the music industry.

“I hope that him having the bravery to even do that has made a few more people that love country music that are gay feel like they have a home there too,” Morris said of Osborne’s impact.

Her collaboration with The Brothers Osborne on the song “All My Favorite People” in 2022 further underscored her commitment to diversity and acceptance in music. As the chorus goes, “It is who it is and we love who we love,” Morris continues to champion a message of love, acceptance, and authenticity in both her personal and professional life.
